The group reorganized, under the leadership of Fleetwood, and slowly took on a new direction - away from the blues and into the mainstream of international popularity, known simply as Fleetwood Mac. Not that it matters much, but symbolically an inexcusable omission. It wasnt until Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and Christine McVie enlisted the services of soft-rock duo Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham that the band took on its definitive form. In Buckingham the band acquired a prodigious guitar talent and a gifted lyricist whose occasionally daffy sensibilities nicely complemented the tender intimacies of Nicks and McVie. Though incestuous liaisons within the group threatened to tear it apart, these also sparked some of the bands greatest material. Witness Rumours, to this day one of the top ten best selling albums of all time. Though a pair of mediocre releases in the 90s threatened to end the bands career with a whimper, The Dance (1997) restored Buckingham and Nicks to the fold and dusted the cobwebs off Fleetwood Macs rich legacy. Their claim to fame is generic, radio-friendly, bloated pop music. This - coupled with Stevie Nickss pretentious lyrics and Lindsey Buckinghams notion that he is in Metallica ( check out the guitar solo ), not to mention the fact he cant write a song with over three chords - should be enough for me to write off Fleetwood Mac for the rest of my days. However, this I cannot deny: Stevie Nicks is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. I dont even care that no one (not even her bandmates) knows what the fuck Gypsy is about. I just love it. When I am in the mood for some fantastic music, Fleetwood Mac, more than any other band, is who I immediately turn to - not because I feel like being challenged by some audial mindfuck, but simply because theyre the very best at what they do. And thats why, even though I dont - by a longshot - consider it the greatest album ever, I turn to Rumours more than any other record in my collection. I just want to hear the very zenith of that same generic, radio-friendly, bloated pop music. What people tend to forget is that, unlike regular pop bands, you could actually feel the emotional turmoil each songwriter went through, locked away within each chart-topper. With each catchy tune came passionate vocal performances and lyrics which often dealt with heartbreak or new found love. Fleetwood Mac pushed radio-friendly pop to its emotional capacity. Peter Green, Danny Kirwan, Christine Perfect, Bob Welch, and BuckinghamNicks all took their turns as the focalvocal point of the band, to varying degrees of success. Well earned pop success came in the mid 70s, when the lineup gelled into the well-known supergroup. Some humdrum tracks on almost every album except Rumours, but quality songs from every era of the band, too. I dont know if there will ever be another band quite like them.
